(PEKIN, Ill.) — It was a rainy & dreary day, which called for some good ole barbecue.
Tonight’s Rib Report took me to Pekin, Illinois to check out BC BBQ on 14th Street.

I like the outside vibe of the place. Feels like an old gas station meets a saloon.
The service was very friendly, and the food got to my table very quickly! Both huge wins in my book. Well let’s talk about the food, shall we?
Every Rib Report I do, I always try something either the server or owner recommends. Tonight, it was the Hog Wing. Seen above, is a delicious and meaty piece of pork that falls right off the bone.
Advertisements
Because there was so much meat on the Hog Wing, I was able to try every sauce at BC’s on that alone! My favorites? The House Spicy & the LovinGood Spicy.

Lovingoods barbecue sauces are one of my favorites made right here in the area. You can find their Facebook page here.
For my meal, I got a 1/3 rack of ribs with a side of green beans and mac n cheese. The Southern Green Beans were delicious. Plenty of flavor and plenty of bacon! The mac was very cheesy and I enjoyed it as well.
The rib meat fell right off the bone and was great mixed in with the spicy sauces. I thought it was a good amount of meat and was cooked very well.
Thanks to BC BBQ for showing me some good hospitality tonight. I really enjoyed my time!

(CREVE COEUR, Ill.) — It’s never a bad day for some barbecue, especially when it’s as phenomenal as Whitey’s BBQ at Crusens Rt 29.
As we get into the meaty spread we were served, I want to give a huge shoutout to Mike White, the owner/founder, for his hospitality. We loved our time at Whitey’s and can’t wait to be back, and bring our friends and family!
Now, this is the BBQ Rib Report ain’t it? So let’s dive right in!
I’ll tell you what, these ribs were so good they don’t even need to have BBQ sauce spread on them. The perfect amount of sweet & smokey (which in my opinion is the near definition of St. Louis style BBQ), with a great amount of meat on the bones. I always try my ribs without sauce at first, and these were incredible!
Let me just say, I am not a fan of cole slaw. But Whitey’s cole slaw was delicious! It had a mayo-based consistency with a sweet flavor to it. My wife and I were both very impressed!
When Mike asked if we wanted to try some wings, I asked for his recommendation. He said the Honey Sriracha wings were the ones to go for. And he was RIGHT! The perfect amount of kick to some wings. Crispy, perfectly dressed with sauce, you can’t go wrong!
Let’s not forget about the tots! My wife said, and I quote, “These tater tots are crisp to perfection.” She also wanted me to note that she is a “self-proclaimed tot snob.” Haha.
If ribs aren’t your thing, hit up the 3 meat combo. We got burnt ends, pulled pork, and brisket! I have to be honest, these might have been the best burnt ends I’ve ever had in my life. And that’s not to take away from the deliciousness of the pulled pork & brisket. You can’t go wrong here!
Advertisements
You’ll also enjoy some moist corn bread. And yes, I said moist. Because I believe that corn bread a lot of times can be dry, and this wasn’t! My wife and I aren’t the hugest corn bread fans, but we are a fan of the corn bread at Whitey’s! And lastly is the baked beans! The recipe calls for a lot of brown sugar, which we love!
The picture above is just a man in Heaven, surrounded by delicious food.

“Whitey” told me the food he serves in his restaurant is the same food he wins barbecue contests with. Wonder how many competitions he’s won? Just look at the amount of trophies he has below.
“Whitey” is the only person in the world who knows the recipe to his BBQ sauce. He told us that his grandmother created the recipe, and passed it along to him when she passed away. He has two big ole’ smokers outside the restaurant which are charcoal grills that he grills with.

I wanted to share the pictures of Whitey’s menu, both back and front, so you all could see what else they have to offer.
As Bennett turns 6-months-old, I’ve taken some time to reflect on what a whirlwind life has been.
Before I get into my own life changes, let me give the biggest shoutout to my smokin’ hot wife Rachel who endured quite the time during her pregnancy. Nearly 9 months of morning sickness, followed by a 26-hour labor. And her epidural didn’t even work! They tried it twice on her (stuck her 6 times!) to no avail. But we did have a wonderful nursing staff and OBGYN there with us the entire time.
After Bennett was born, Rachel and I both came to find we BOTH had the thought go through our minds “We’re never having children again” during the birthing process. Bennett’s big ole head was lodged up against her tailbone for hours on end, causing excruciating and constant pain. And me? Well I just hated seeing her go through that. And 105 minutes worth of “PUSH!!! PUSH!!! PUSH!!!” really has you questioning your life choices.
But once that little, beautiful 8 pounds and 4.5 ounces baby was cuddled in our arms at 1:17 a.m., it was all worth it. He was perfect. He still is.
When babies are just born, it takes a few months for their emotions to really show. But that doesn’t mean they can’t make you laugh still. One thing I dearly remember, and honestly miss at this point, is how he used to smack his lips when he was hungry.
Every night around 2:00 a.m., Rachel and I would wake up to the sound of “smack, smack smack,” turn over to each other, and just laugh. It is such a ridiculous noise but you immediately know what it means. Nowadays? He just screams his head off when he wants a bottle.
Let’s not forget when he also used to literally bite at the bottle, shaking his face left and right like he had never had an ounce of milk before. That’s why we began calling him our “Little Lion.” It was so cute.
But when he was first born, he didn’t show any emotion. Something he has plenty of now. It has been such a joy to see his personality shine. Now he smiles every time I walk in the room. How can a 6-month-old baby make a grown man feel like the most important person in the world? He can.
He giggles. He farts extremely loud. He burps extremely loud. Yes, sometimes he pulls mommy’s hair.
Not that I’m claiming to be a “pro” at this daddy thing, but there is some advice I’ll share for whoever wants it.
“Just remember. He/she is just a baby.”
You’ll be surprised how many times this line will pop up in your head as the early months of parenthood go on.
“Why won’t he take the bottle?” “Why won’t he sleep?” “Why won’t he burp?”
Remember, your baby is just that. A baby! It is always important to try and find the root cause of issues if things persist. But for those one-off times you’re just exhausted and you’re getting frustrated your baby won’t burp? Remember, they’re just a baby. This is a character-building experience you’ll go through. It teaches you patience, it teaches you grace.
I’d recommend having someone just a text away who can answer quick questions. For us, it was my brother-in-law who is a pediatrician. We’re really lucky. But all those times we thought we had “stupid” questions, but they were just bugging us? Hey, lets text Brad. And he was always able to give us sound advice and ease our anxious new-parent minds.
So would we like to have other kids? Absolutely. But Bennett has set the bar extremely high! We’ll love our kids all the same… but man we love this little guy with everything we have. So good luck kids #2 and beyond!
I think some of the best things I’ve seen on a daily basis is the joy Bennett brings to others. His grand-parents, aunts/uncles, cousins, and even just our friends on social media who get to see his smiling face. It’s contagious!
Bennett, I’m excited to see the man you will become. My goal in life is to support you in anyway that I can. To be your #1 fan. We love you and are thankful for you!
(MACKINAW, Ill.) — Surrounded by scenic central Illinois countryside sits the beautiful Mackinaw Valley Vineyard.
The vineyards were planted in 1997 and the Hahn family opened the winery in 2003.
Advertisements
Mackinaw Valley Vineyard is well-known across central Illinois for anything from good wine, hosting live music and weddings, to stunning views.
The winery has a lake in the back of the property with picture-perfect photo opportunities, a gazebo, and fish in the lake! Mackinaw Valley Vineyard hosts a fishing day every year on Father’s Day.

So let’s get into the wine we tried on this sunny, Sunday afternoon!
We’ll start with one of the wines I ended up buying a bottle of! The Red Dragon. This was easily my wife and I’s favorite wine of the day. It’s a sweet red table wine with apple flavoring. It starts out with fruity sweet apple and cherry flavors and then finishes off with tangy festive cranberry. Served chilled, this is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted!
Next to the Red Dragon you’ll find my second bottle purchase of the day. The Deux Noir. It’s a Baco and Corot Noir blueberry & blackberry wine that “complement the natural raspberry flavors of these French American hybrid grapes.”
When describing this, the bartender told me this was right down the middle between sweet & dry. He was absolutely right. This was perfectly balanced for wine lovers of all kinds.
In the photo above, I’m enjoying the Red Dragon while my wife is sipping on the White Dragon. Also, can I just say how wonderful my wife did on putting together this charcuterie board? Mackinaw Valley Vineyard allows you to bring in your own crackers, cheese and meat if you’d like. So we did!
My wife and I enjoyed some great conversation with Diane Hahn, the owner of Mackinaw Valley Vineyard. Diane and I worked together multiple times back when I was in TV News on different stories and interviews, she’s always been so kind! Every time I’ve been to Mackinaw Valley, the bartenders are always very friendly and knowledgeable about wine.
The White Dragon is a pineapple sweet wine. I really enjoyed this one, but Rachel liked the Red Dragon more. So of course, I gave her my glass of Red Dragon and drank the White Dragon. But hey, I loved them both! Plus I did get a 2nd glass of Red Dragon later in the day, so it was a win-win situation!

Of course our adorable son Bennett had to accompany us on our winery Sunday. While he is still nearly 21 years away from ever trying wine, he did enjoy trying his first blueberry which we brought along for him.
He loves his mommy!
And one last photo for good measure. The blue skies really bring out the blue in his eyes. He gets that from his daddy.
Mackinaw Valley Vineyard provided me with some GORGEOUS photos. You can see a few more below.
I also tried Seyval Blanc semi-sweet wine. This was similar to a Moscato! Very good-tasting wine. The Jasmine’s Moonlight and Carly’s Creation were wonderful as well. Carly’s Creation was a Concord grape wine.
We had wonderful weather here on this February afternoon, but Mackinaw Valley Vineyard really shines in the spring and fall. You can see the green grass and trees shining bright in the photos below. I took my dad here last summer, he was so impressed with the grounds and he loved the wine.
We also brought some friends here last November and they really enjoyed their time. They got a bottle of Jasmine’s Moonlight, which was one of their favorites!

(MORTON, Ill.) — On the search for amazing BBQ ribs across Central Illinois, there are a few key things I’m really looking for.
Meatiness, seasoning, and sauce (which all tie into flavor). My 2nd Rib Report at Dac’s Smokehouse in Morton, Illinois nailed all of these aspects. But before we get to the main dish, let’s start with the appetizer!
Introducing the Breaded Cauliflower Wings. I’m a huge cauliflower fan, for starters, but this is a great take on the dish. They’re tossed in Dac’s homemade Tandoori hot sauce which gives it a great kick! My wife gives these a 5/5!
Time now for the main course. The whole point of this series! A 1/2 rack of ribs! See for yourself.
From a presentation perspective, I was already impressed when the half-rack of ribs showed up to the bar at Dac’s. The meatiness was on point, and there was plenty of seasoning (but not too much!).
Diving into the ribs, I was not disappointed at all. The flavor was incredible! Served with two sides, this is the perfect entrée for any rib lover out there. I got fries & cheesy corn. If you’ve never had cheesy corn, you’re missing out! And Dac’s has some wonderful cheesy corn.
I got two sauces alongside the ribs. 1: Honey BBQ. 2: Strawberry Crush.
These were a great mix because the Honey BBQ was thicker and a bit deeper in flavor, while the Strawberry Crush was much sweeter and a little thinner.
I tend to sway towards the sweet sauces anyway, which is why I went with these sauces.
But they have tons of other flavors. Give them a try!
I enjoyed a Holla Atcha Blonde ale from White Oak Brewing in Normal. Really enjoyed it!
The service at Dac’s was very friendly and accommodating. The service was efficient and I got my food in a quick amount of time.
I was at Dac’s location in Morton. The address is 25 E Adams St, Morton, IL 61550.

(HILTON HEAD ISLAND , SC) — While Hilton Head Island was only first incorporated as a town in 1983, it has clearly become a must-see destination for tourists around the world.
It was first sighted 350 years ago by William Hilton, an English explorer.
“Over the centuries, Hilton Head Island’s natural beauty, spectacular seascapes, exceptional ecology and South Carolina historical sites have beckoned generations of explorers—with Native Americans, English, Spanish, French colonists, pirates, African-Americans and soldiers all leaving their footprints on the sands of South Carolina’s Treasured Coast,” Hilton Head Island’s website says.
Now the Island is filled with beautiful beaches, resorts, homes and much more. In this article, we’re taking a look at some of the largest home sales on HHI over the last few years.
“Demand for the world class resort lifestyle Hilton Head Island provides, fueled by a mass exodus from the Northeast/Midwest, easy accessibility, short term rental capability, and a plethora of accolades, continues to put stress on our inventory,” said realtor Max Gregori with The Prud’homme Team with Carolina Realty Group. “With virtually no new development on Hilton Head Island, it is no surprise our property values have increased considerably in recent years, and is positioned well for future growth.”
(WASHINGTON, Ill.) — At any barbecue restaurant, I go straight to my tried & true barbecue ribs.
I don’t have an exact number of the amount of ribs I’ve eaten over the years, but I’d imagine it’s inching near 1,000 at this point! So I’m setting out on the Central Illinois Rib Report!
I was first introduced to Brickhouse roughly 2 years ago to the day! My wife Rachel (at the time girlfriend) and I were enjoying a Valentine’s Day Weekend in Central Illinois. We were dating long-distance so she’d come up some weekends to Peoria and we’d explore the town. I’d plan date nights, adventures, you name it! What a time.
Brickhouse caught my eye, because during COVID they were offering outdoor tents for visitors to sit in and eat. This was a way to appease the COVID protocols and offer guests a fun time.
Since then, I’ve been back a handful of times, and have enjoyed my meal every time. So let’s dig in!
First, we’re starting with my classic BBQ rib meal alongside some tasty fries and green beans for the sides.
I always speak very highly of Brickhouse’s ribs. They’re meaty, seasoned well, and paired great with the sauces they offer. To the next photo we go!
I would LOVE to see some more sauces at Brickhouse. Maybe we can meet over a 1/2 rack + a beer and discuss another sauce, but that’s a tale for another night! But the ones they do have are solid. I enjoy the Sweet and Tangy. Those go great with the ribs and burnt ends (which I’ll get to next). My party REALLY enjoyed the Spicy Smoked Sriracha though! So try all 3.
Now… to my favorite thing on the menu. The burnt ends. Always tender, always delicious. Pairs wonderfully with the different sauces, but GREAT just by itself! If I had one thing to recommend at Brickhouse, the burnt ends is it.
You’ll have to check if they’re still offering the scrumptious Chocolate-covered Strawberry milkshake since it’s after Valentine’s. And yes, I said scrumptious.
This gives me happy memories to the date night with Rachel back when we came here on our date two years ago. So of course I had to get it again this year!
Now we’ve got this big fella taking over our lives. The greatest gift on God’s green earth. Bennett tried to convince daddy to let him try his ribs, but I said ‘Not yet, son! Not yet!’ His mother and I have plans to let him try BBQ ribs for his 1st birthday…
HONORABLE MENTIONS: But of course, maybe you’re not a rib fanatic like me! So let’s give you some other options.
1: BBQ chicken meal — My dad had this and LOVED it. Gotta love some sweet potato fries. And don’t sleep on the green beans! Very tasty. See the photo below.
2: Burgers — Well, it’s in the name! Rachel tends to go towards the burgers at Brickhouse and she always enjoys them. Check out the chips they come with. SO good! I believe in the background is a photo of one of the other Valentine’s Day cocktails that my friend Chris got.
3: Last, but not least. PINEAPPLE HABANERO CHICKEN WINGS! Man, these were good! But MAN! Were they hot! I only had 1, but I loved it. This was the table favorite that night. Have water on deck if you’re taking these on!
I’d like to thank Brickhouse for being such welcoming hosts and allowing us to enjoy our time at your establishment.
You can find Brickhouse at 1021 N Cummings Ln, Washington, IL 61571.
(WASHINGTON, Ill.) — Nestled in the rural area of Washington, Illinois sits a relaxing getaway from the hustle & bustle of daily life.
Surrounded by fields of grape vines is Tres Rojas Winery. Bob and Lisa Barry purchased the property off Cruger Rd. in Washington back in spring 2019. The official opening was in December 2020!
I knew of Bob & Lisa even before the concrete was laid & the building stood up tall on the property. Back when I was a reporter in local TV news, I spoke with Bob as he searched central Illinois for the perfect spot for his winery. At the time, it was just “Barry Vineyards,” but now it’s blossomed into a beautiful winery filled with memories, laughs, and shall I say some fantastic wine.
Advertisements
It’s currently the beginning of February. It’s cold, there’s been snow on the ground, but the doors just opened back up at Tres Rojas at the start of the month so I figured this was the perfect time to visit.
Whether you’re a fan of the sweets, or prefer your wines dry, Tres Rojas has it all.
I personally enjoy wines on the sweeter side, so I can attest to the ones offered at the winery.
My current favorites (in no particular order) are the Blueberry Tart, Rhu-Berry, Sweet Maria, and the Strawberry. For the first time, I tried the “Besita de Roja” and Vino Dorado which I really enjoyed as well. The V2 and Traminette are wonderful additions as well.
Don’t know which wine you’d like to try? Well do a tasting or grab a flight. You can try 4 wines in each taste test for $5, or get a flight of 4.
My opinion? Do a taste test of 5 that really catch your eye, then once you’ve picked your favorites, choose those for your 4 on the flight.
If you are sure about your favorite without a shadow of a doubt, just grab a glass or a bottle to sip and enjoy! But make sure to share with good friends and family around the table. And say “hello” to the owners’ adorable pups running around the property, Onyx and Bruno. These dogs are extremely friendly and will welcome you into the winery (surprisingly very quietly) when you walk through the doors. Not a dog person? No worries! These pups won’t bother you. If you want to stay away from them, they’ll stay away from you!
Some news I am extremely excited to share on this blog post, are the new wines Tres Rojas is debuting in 2023! One is the “Bulldog Red,” this is a dry red blend with the Barry’s dog Bruno on the label. You can get a sneak peek of the label below!
Then Tres Rojas is unveiling a semi-sweet LaCrosse Peach blend, alongside a First Harvest Red & First Harvest White. The Red will be semi-sweet, the White will be sweet.
The Peach will be bottled this March, followed by the First Harvest Red & Whites.
The Bulldog Red will hopefully be ready early to mid Summer.
For the Railroad Red fans, there will be a replacement coming out this spring called Resurrection Red! It will have a lot of the same flavor profiles.
Another fun aspect I’ve always enjoyed about the winery is the events they host throughout the year. I’ve sat on the patio during a warm summer’s day while food trucks sat in the fields outside and live music was playing.
This month, they’re even offering a Murder Mystery dinner! You can find all of these events posted to their Facebook page.
Something new I recently discovered was the Tres Rojas Wine Club (which yes, I did join).
In this club, you receive 4 bottles 3 times a year in February, June, and October.
You can be in the Dry Select or the Sweet Spot club. I’m sure you know which one I chose if you read carefully.
Advertisements
So what are the perks? Well, every month you get a free tasting for up to 3 people! Next weekend I’m taking my father and a friend of mine to the winery to enjoy that perk! You can see us Saturday after the Bradley vs. Murray State Men’s Basketball Game.
You also get 10% off 6 bottles or more, and 20% off a case or more. Plus, exclusive invites and priority reservations for Winery events. And last but not least, 10% off Event Room Rentals.
The wine crop to be harvested on the land in Washington has grown exponentially. Starting this year, the amount of grapes on the wines will be a huge increase compared to year’s past.
Lisa Barry tells me they have 7.5 acres of grapes on 51.5 acres of land total.
There are 11 different varietals, mostly Midwest hybrids. Reds include: Marquette, Leon Millot, Chelois, Landot Noir, and Chancellor. Whites include: Seyval, Tramminette, Vignoles, LaCrosse, and Edelweiss.
There are currently 12 wines in the tanks and Tres Rojas will need bottling help this year. If you would like to work for wine, join the email list and watch Facebook!
Add where you’re from on the U.S. map inside! You can see sticky notes around the U.S. where visitors came from other countries as well.
I’ll just add a personal note as I wrap up the article. I’d like to thank Bob & Lisa for always being such welcoming hosts every time I’ve visited the Winery. I’ve brought multiple different friend groups & family members, and each time has been extremely enjoyable.
Stay tuned as the Heart of Illinois Wine Tour continues! Central Illinois boasts many wonderful wineries waiting to be enjoyed. I am currently in talks with Mackinaw Valley Vineyards (Mackinaw), Waters Edge Winery & Bistro (Peoria Heights), Big Horse Vineyards (Lewistown), and Spoon River Junction Winery (Canton) to continue this wine tour through the summer!
Know of another winery you’d like me to visit? Comment on this post or message me on Facebook at “Matt Sheehan TV.” Thanks so much for joining me on this tour, I hope to see you next time. Bennett says have a wonderful day!
(Peoria, Ill.) — People around the world struggle with maintaining a healthy balance between coffee intake and staying hydrated.
Statistics show roughly 75% of Americans drink coffee on a daily basis, but studies show 50% of coffee consumers aren’t “adequately hydrating,” according to ElectroBrew.
So that’s where the Peoria-based startup coffee business steps in.
“ElectroBrew uses a proprietary formula to infuse coffee with electrolytes, allowing ElectroBrew sippers to achieve proper hydration while still enjoying the great taste they expect from good, quality coffee,” the company’s owners tell me.
“Coffee causes an electrolyte imbalance. Coffee drinkers and performance seekers feel more productive with a strong cup of Joe, but the dehydrating effects of coffee present as many downsides as benefits,” the website reads. “We set out to change that. By adding hydrating properties to the energy boosting ritual of coffee, we at ElectroBrew have created a solution to overcome the barriers to coffee consumption so athletes, performance enthusiasts, and health conscious consumers can have their coffee and stay hydrated, too. As athletes, we have experienced the positive results of a carefully developed hydrating coffee. We understand just how many people could appreciate waking up ready to conquer the world every morning.”

But you don’t just have to be an athlete to enjoy ElectroBrew. Proper hydration is important for everyone.
But no, coffee is not for babies. This photo was just too cute not to share!
You can get a Medium or Dark Roast of ElectroBrew. They even have a membership if you’d like to get it shipped to you each month. Find out how to get your monthly membership by clicking here.
If you like to shop in-person and would rather buy it that way, you can find the hydrating coffee in some central Illinois shops.

(Illinois) — It wasn’t an easy decision to leave TV news.
Many times I’ve sat there, wondering if this is the right move. The sentence that pops in my mind every single time is “the right decision at the right time.” I believe that.
It’s been an incredible nearly 5 years doing TV News. I started as a college intern before being offered a full-time job as a reporter/photographer, promoted to a reporter, promoted to weekend anchor, then promoted to morning anchor. For the last 2.5 years I’ve been anchoring at least 4 hours of news a day, hosting a weekly political show, and interviewing some of your favorite celebrities.
I have to give it to the viewers and people on social media who have followed the journey. They have been amazing to speak with and their support has always helped me push forward.
I’m extremely blessed to announce I am going to work for OSF HealthCare right here in Peoria. I will be the Media Relations Coordinator, mainly representing Peoria and Bloomington. I’ll continue working with the local news on stories, while also writing for the OSF Newsroom. It’s an online database of stories that the news can use for their shows.
I’m also really hoping to use my fluency in Spanish in this job. Communication is key, and I believe by communicating important, sometimes life-saving information in both English and Spanish, I can help more people throughout the State of Illinois and beyond.

I will also be a Contributor for City SC Report. Many of you know I am born and raised St. Louis, Missouri. We are getting a new MLS team this spring! The City SC Report is a fan-based website & social media platform 100% dedicated to covering St. Louis City SC. I will lead the YouTube channel and offer content on the website if needed. I hope to be at as many City SC games in-person to cover things on my social media and this website, as well!
There are many other projects and dreams I have that I believe will now be able to come to fruition. I have a sense of freedom and opportunity which has a breath of fresh air.

I thank my family, friends, viewers, and co-workers who have been such blessings to me over the years. I wish everyone the very best.
